Up until very recently, the Rhodes Scholarships were only given out in twenty different constituencies (representing over 60 different countries). The Rhodes Scholarships are now open to applicants from all over the world thanks to the establishment of two new Global Scholarships. Eligible students from any country in the world are able to submit an application (subject to nomination). The Rhodes Global Scholarship is looking for outstanding young leaders who are motivated to engage with global challenges and to promote international understanding and peace. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is October 1.
Host Institution(s): Oxford University in UK
Level/Fields of study: Any full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Oxford, with some exceptions.
Number of Scholarships: 2
Target group: Students who are not from existing Rhodes constituencies
A Rhodes Scholarship will pay for all of your university and college tuition, as well as provide you with a living stipend (£17,310 per year in 2021-22), a settling in allowance, health insurance, a visa, and two economy class flights to and from the UK for the beginning and end of your studies in Oxford.
The scholarship will be awarded for a period of two years, with renewal contingent on continued good academic achievement and ethical behavior on the part of the recipient.
a. Nationality and Citizenship: In order to be eligible to apply to the Global Scholarships, you must not be eligible to apply to any of the Rhodes Scholarships through any of the existing Rhodes constituencies. If you have a strong connection to one or more Rhodes constituency but do not match their qualifying criteria, you should explore inter-jurisdictional consideration rather for the Global Scholarship. This is because inter-jurisdictional consideration is more likely to be awarded.
You need to fulfill one of the following requirements:
i. You need to be at least 18 years old and not yet 24 years old on October 1, 2022, in order to be eligible (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1998 and on or before 1 October 2004).
OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual)
ii. On the first of October 2022, you must not have reached the age of 27 (that is, you must have been born after the first of October 1995) AND you must have fulfilled or be on track to fulfill the academic requirements for completing your first undergraduate degree on or after the first of October 2021*.
c. Academic achievement: You must already have completed, or will have completed by July 2023, an undergraduate degree (normally a Bachelor’s degree) with an academic background and grade that – at a minimum – meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of your chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford. This requirement can be met by having already completed an undergraduate degree, or by having completed an undergraduate degree and having it completed by July 2023.
Because there is a great deal of competition from students all over the world for places at the University of Oxford, prospective students will have a better chance of being accepted into Oxford if they have either a First Class Honours Degree or an equivalent, or a GPA of 3.70 or higher out of a possible 4.0.
d. English Language: You need to have a high enough standard of English to meet the University of Oxford’s standards for English language competence (at the Higher Level specified).
e. If your initial application to the Rhodes Scholarships was not successful, you are allowed to reapply for the scholarship only once more (and this time, it must be in the same constituency), provided that you continue to meet the eligibility requirements.
Instructions for submitting an application:
The submission period will begin on June 1st, 2022.
If your university does not nominate you in advance for the Global Scholarship, then you will not be allowed to submit an application for the scholarship. You will be required to register the details of a suitable nominator via the application form, and you will not be allowed to submit your application until the nominator in question has submitted their nomination.
You are required to submit your application online before the 1st of August 2022 at 23:59 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), along with all of the accompanying documentation.
